I read crime fiction almost exclusively. I like the suspense and the resolution. This is not a crime novel it is fiction hung on several crimes. There were plenty of crimes but no detection - all it took was for the detective to ask 2 people a few pertinent questions and 2 cold cases were solved. It would appear that the Police in both cases didn't do their job. Almost all the characters end up knowing each other through various plot devices. It's all rather ridiculous.
The prose may be beautiful, ironic and whatever else other reviewers have come up with but to call this a crime novel is pushing it. It is more a series of character studies all intertwined throughout the narrative which makes it all rather disjointed until most of it is tied up in a messy bow at the end.
