Taking a slow turn for the worse. This isn't bad, just not up to standard.
on 19 November 2014
As most everyone here, I am a Terry Pratchett fan. I did not get in at the start, joining in the fun around Guards, Guards (still one of my favourite books period, never mind just Pratchett's work). Over time Terry's style has changed and evolved, moving from obvious, yet witty jokes, to something more like a satirical take on modern society.
However the writing for me, in it's style and presentation has changed for the worse. Instead of having witty, snappy and short sentences and paragraphs, we now have pages filled, with very little to break up the flow. How much of that is Terry's fault and how much is the editors/publisher I cannot say (I've no idea who makes those kind of decisions) but i feel the work suffers for it.
With regards to this story, it's not a bad story. The Wizards of the Unseen University (The Greatest place of Magical learning on the Disc don’t you know) need to field a football team to keep a legacy coming in, a take on football and the passions it invokes in society, A few new characters, none that really grabbed me, but none that were poor in any way.
In the end this is an okay story, i don't regret reading it, but I will not be picking it up again in the future.
