Definitely a must-have for Spanish students! Even those with an advanced knowledge of Spanish vocabulary could benefit from this book.

Each topic is split into three levels: from basic need-to-know words to "wow, will I ever need this?!" vocabulary ...although if you're a university student like me, you'll find that yes, you do need those obscure words.

It also highlights the differences in usage in the various Spanish-speaking countries. So for any of you planning on trips to South America, this book is absolutely perfect for you too.

There are exercises at the end of each topic to build on the vocabulary you've learnt and expand your active vocabulary.

Don't let the price put you off: this book is worth it.

Very helpful. Contains bloads of words. Although, it is a little bit difficult for me still. Also, if you want to do the exercises, you must have all the vocab mastered perfectly. But that's good I guess. I recommend ;-)

This book is expensive, but if used probably can provide years of study for the advanced student of Spanish. The great thing about the book is that it does not simply present lists of thematic vocabulary with the odd explanation like a lot of other vocabulary books, but also contains a lot of exercises to help you to retain the vocabulary by using it.
Types of exercise include: definitions of words, explaining the difference in nuance between two words, translation of words, phrases and passages, reading comprehension, sentence formation, word searches, written exercises using various registers (letter writing, advertisement compostion etc), questionnaire filling etc etc.
The book covers all sorts of vocabulary ranging from swear words, to slang to formal and technical terms.
The Spanish of Spain, Mexico and Argentina is focused on and when different words/terms are used in different countries, this is clearly indicated. The register of each word/term is also clearly indicated.
Each of the twenty units is divided into three levels of increasing difficulty and the exercises are also differentiated. This makes the book very felxible. For example, a first year student of Spanish at degree level could work through level one of all of the Units, doing the exercises and then return to the beginning and work through level two to increase his depth of lexical knowledge on each subject the next year and then complete level three in the third year.
Even if this book is not officially used as part of your University course, it is a great way to increase your vocabulary and writing abilities in general and the topics will be useful for any degree course.
