Mai, the wood nymph/investigative journalist who featured heavily in book 2 "The Awakening" takes centre stage in the seventh book in this series. Since her involvement with an epic battle between light and dark magic, Mai's own magic now fails to work and the previous fun loving nymph suffers intense nightmares; the result of post traumatic stress syndrome. Mai is convinced she is going crazy; she sees demons on a daily basis and when she is attacked and knocked unconscious in her apartment she awakens with no signs of a struggle or the injuries inflicted upon her. Whilst her friends and colleagues may not believe her claims (easily dismissed with no shred of evidence) Mai finds some safety in her dreams with a faceless man who protects her from enemies and worships her body.

Dream walker and chameleon (a supernatural able to shift into any animal or human form) Nick Blackhawk is initially reluctant to admit he has met his spirit mate in the dream realm, yet he remains intensely attracted to Mai Groves; unaware they are one and the same. Quickly entangled in Mai's life, Nick finds himself protecting her when she is not only threatened as she uncovers the shady dealings of a politician, but also a supernatural creature who wants Mai for his own nefarious scheme. Throughout their battles, Nick remains conflicted by his strong attraction to Mai and his growing feelings of unfaithfulness to his unknown spirit mate.

This may be my most favourite book so far in this series with plenty of magic, action and passion. Mai is certainly a more realistic and likeable character as she is now all too aware of the dangers that surround her (as opposed to the annoyingly ignorant to any personal danger and I must get my story at any cost reporter she portrayed in book 2) whilst Nick is just the dreamiest hero; in and out of the spirit dimensions. There are some enjoyable twists and a steady, action packed story line which keeps the reader easily engrossed plus plenty of mushy moments and heated sexual tension between the leading lovers for romance fans.

For centuries they have walked among us--vampires, shape-shifters, the Celtic Sidhe, demons, and other magical beings. Their battle to reign supreme is constant, but one force holds them in check, a race of powerful warriors known as the...IMMORTALS

Random flashes of light. Ominous messages written on steamy mirrors. Assailants lurking in shadows. Mai's hallucinations are becoming a little too real--the last one almost killed her. She's faced ancient demons and rogue vampires, but this kind of dark magic is more powerful than any she's seen. Mai also senses someone else trying to help her, a dream walker who comes in the night to soothe her fears. And fulfill her wildest fantasies. But who is he? As the danger and desire escalate, Mai is determined to find him--for only together can they stop THE HAUNTING.

Not one of the best titles in the series but still worth reading to learn more about some of the characters in the previous books.

Loved this story.. It had a happy ending without any of the nastiness featured in other stories of this series.
