Everything you need to know about observation and capturing human moments is in this book. The images might look easy, but this belies technical expertise and compositional skill. These images were all captured at night, low light with no flash at high ISO. (I have discovered from experience how difficult this is).Their quality is therefore remarkable. But more importantly, the stories they tell bear repeated retelling. I can go back and see something new every time. I have read and re-read this book over and over. 'Read' because narrative is key; there are multiple stories within, between and along the images. And there is pathos and humour aplenty; Dakowicz is an observer, but also a participant in the carnival, as can be seen from the glances of some of his subjects.
It also helps that the book was designed by Jonathan Barnbrook and that the mise en scene is in Cardiff, just up the road from Newport, where I grew up.
Bravo Dakowicz and thankyou. This is my new desert island book.

This presents a fascinating picture of night life in a major British city. One is impressed by the photographer's ability to capture so many candid moments in the clubbers' nights out.

What a great photo book! Some of the photos are hilarious, some of them greatly capture the moment. Some capture the loneliness and some the togetherness of the night life. This book has it all and its with full page photos.

Got this book having followed Dakowicz on flickr for a while. He is one of the best young photographers out there and Cardiff After Dark is the best example. The book is absolutely amazing - it manages to do what is so difficult in times of constant exposure to imagery - sometimes it makes you laugh, sometimes cringe, sometimes think - it will never make you yawn. At times it is brash, while on the next page it can be very subtle. I love how Dakowicz uses street photography's method to tell real vivid stories - again, something which few street photographers can do. A brilliant photographer and a brilliant book. Highly recommended!

Probably the best photo-book of 2012. A consummate photographer, who has captured the highs and lows of an alcohol fuelled Saturday night out.
