TOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICEon 3 June 2014
I keep a special drawer for colouring materials, beautiful books, pads, equipment. You might be surprised at how many little boys and girls enjoy sitting up at a table creating gorgeous, careful, impressive well thought out works of art. Our grandchildren and their friends can be calmed and amused for long enough to allow a proper grown up chat in the armchairs while the children half listen, half concentrate, busy with their pens and books.

This Garden Fairies stained glass book's perforated pages allow the work to be removed tidily, then held up or stuck to a window for the full glowing effect of the colours to be admired. They can be looked at from both sides. If you colour the reverse pages with different shades, you can create an even deeper hue. I like the old fashioned mood of these innocent pictures and am glad that a pleasure from my long ago childhood still holds a power for good with today's screen based generation. The proud, generous offering by the child of the finished picture as a gift is always touching. Leave it on display for a while, if you place the picture with the coloured side facing outdoors then the crisp black outline will enhance the magical stained glass window effect.

Darcy May is also educating, offering a lesson in the names of lilacs, bluebells, snowdrops, daisies, cowslips, roses, asters, ivy, tulips, pussy willow, pansies, convolvulus, buttercups, iris, lily pads.... You can then venture outside and seek out the plants and blooms in the garden and meadows. You might be lucky and spot a fairy!

The sixteen scenes have fairies and sprites in their centre, artfully nestled, entwined in the flower, plant of the page. They are all botanically correct. Crayons, paints, felt tips, acrylics, watercolours, even oil paints, mixed media too all work fine on the translucent surface.

I can imagine adults also getting relaxation and satisfaction from filling in the outlines and seeing the attractive results. This book would be a lovely gift, together with some new Staedtler Triplus Colour 323 SB20 Fibre-Tip Pen Desktop Box - Assorted Colours (Pack of 20) say. When a little under the weather, convalescing, a welcome to stay with Granny, birthday or holiday gift that would be a well accepted present.

Not everything has to happen on an ipad!

I bought this used and only the first page had been torn out so I was glad for that. My little nieces absolutely loved coloring these in and you can get nice markers or pens for this if you want them to be brighter. The pages have to be cut out or torn out of the book so you have to be careful. May be worth in the beginning to take the book apart as it is just paperback and then it would be already be in separate pages.

A very nice book of stained-glass colourings. My daughter and I exhausted the local selections to be had in the shops; and on receipt of this book we were not disappointed. Lovely drawings, with excellent detail. Only thing to do now is to buy some fancy felt-tip pens to do them justice. We're delighted with them.
