The best kind of costume books contain illustrations ,portraits, and best of all photographs. This book has the latter in abundance. From the early victorian crinolines to the slimmer fashions of the edwardian age. Its a must for students of fashion and costume makers.

I bought this book, expecting to be blown away with lavish descriptions, detailed diagrams and touched-up clear photographs.
Instead, this book has a LOT of history which is positioned between two huge blocks of photographs.
Yes, there *Are* a lot of photographs, but they are not annotated and are rather dull, as they are originals.
This book would be good for someone studying fashion, etc. but if you're expecting a colourful, detailed manual this is not for you.

For my review of this book, please see 'Fashion and Reality', which is the same book issued with a different title for the American market!

I bought this birthday present with another two books on a similar topic for my classical singer daughter. She approves!
