TOP 500 REVIEWERon 16 September 2004
This is a good business biography. The author has an eye for the interesting detail - such as the fact that the future chairman of Coca-Cola and the future Yankee-hating Communist leader Fidel Castro went to the same elite Cuban private school. He also has a good understanding of the business issues that Roberto Goizueta addressed during his remarkably successful career. This is not a hagiography or an "authorized" biography. In fact, author David Griesing reports that Goizueta opposed the book project and directed his friends and the public relations department of Coca-Cola not to cooperate. Remarkably, in the face of that opposition, the author not only persevered but also produced a book that seems scrupulously objective. If it is not a paen, neither is it a hatchet job. It's the real thing, and we find it well worth reading and recommending.

Writing a book about a person, who does not want to cooperate is a tough job. David Greising has done a tremendous job of putting this book together about the life and leadership of Roberto Goizueta, the man behind the massive growth of the world's biggest marketing machine, Coca Cola. To me Goizueta does not come across as a typical people leader or a motivator but a result oriented manager, a task master, a political manoeuvrer and a shrewd CEO. This book will be of special interest to an expatriate, aspiring to run a global conglomerate in a foreign land. While reading about Goizueta I learnt so much about Coca Cola as a company! Good book to read.

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy this book but I found the rise of Goizueta to the CEO position too fast (in context of the book - around chapter 3). Once there, the book flies and you have to remember LOTS of different names of people. Not bad, and a good insight into politics at Board Level.

An excellent read, the author has gone to great lengths to ensure accuracy of the information. Not only does it show an insight to the Coke company but alson how and why things are as they are. Highly recommended
