I got into this book immediately, and found the message clear and authoritative. The authors believe that credibility, that gift of inspiring and retaining loyalty, are at the bottom of the finest examples of leadership - no matter what your profession or trade.

There are chapters on how leadership is a two-way relationship, why 'credibility' makes a difference, the secret of discovering yourself, affirming shared values, developing capacity, sustaining hope and the struggle to be human. Each of these concepts is explained in clear, obvious ways - for example, 'leadership is a relationship because you can't follow someone who isn't credible, who doesn't truly believe in what they're doing and how they're doing it.'

If you've been on the scene for a while in business, then you'll probably remember this book from years ago - it's the same one, but thoroughly updated in a clear, no-nonsense format, and absolutely current for now. For those who are studying formally, every quote and statistic is properly referenced. For those who are putting it into practice, there are key summaries at the end of every chapter.

The book is of sturdy design, and well laid-out with a clear type face and sufficient white space - suitable for those with a visual disability.

I first came across the authors ideas way back in the 1990's when an audio book called Credibility was produced by Nightingale Conant. This audio programme had some good ideas that could be implemented by anyone to improve their credibility and leadership skills. This book is a revised and updated version of that product.

The book is split into 9 chapters. Each chapters is about 20 to 30 pages long. The first chapter sets the scene for the rest of the book by talking about relationships and leadership. In essence credibility leadership is all about building strong relationships with others and so offering them hope, quality values, purpose and understanding. The first chapter is easily digestible and unlike a lot of other leadership books I have read, gets to the point very quickly. This is one of the best things about the authors' approach, it is to the point and offers the reader quick but quality solutions and action points that can be implemented easily.

The book offers the reader, sensible straightforward action steps to enhance their leadership credibility. It is to the point and all the theory is backed by solid evidence gained in the real world. I have always liked the ideas contained in this treatise and I can happily recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve and build better relationships, enhance their leadership style and create more credibility for themselves within the workplace.

Good book recommended.

'Credibility' sounds like a horrible management buzzword, but it's really at the core of being perceived to be an effective leader, and this book details in a clear, entertaining and effective way, just how you generate and sustain credibility. Rather than being underpinned by anecdotes and 'gut-feeling', the lessons of the book are supported by quantitative as well as qualitative data. It delves into what people want to see in their leaders, and how those qualities can be nurtured through common-sense principles. It's well written, well argued, and has exactly that which it needs to be believable - credibility.

I know that sounds like it's for senior managers and such in an organization, but really there's a lot in here for people in any kind of leadership position, even if it's just an ad-hoc leadership of a social circle.

If you are a senior leader, or work with helping executives develop themselves, then this is a 'must read' book.

Building trust and confidence is an essential quality for leaders, and some may say, a quality that in current economic times is difficult to find. The general focus is to 'say what you mean, and mean what you say' - in other words, build credibility.

This book looks at the six actions leaders need to take to build strengthen credibility and discuss how to balance the need between managing constituents and one's owns values. (1) discover your self, (2) appreciate constituents, (3) affirm shared values, (4) develop capacity, (5) serve a purpose, and (6)sustain hope.

This book is ideal for people preparing to launch a public career, like politicians, but it gives little advice on how to build and maintain credibility as a business, a costly but oh so important factor of success.
Best piece of advice in this book: "Say what you mean and mean what you say!"

Absoloutely brilliant. Buy it now.

For a slightly longer reasoning, this book is probably one of the best i've read about the nature of leadership. This particular text is an updated version of an older work (always a good sign) and really brings it up to date with the modern world. Half scientific text and half motivational text, it runs through the basic tennants of what it is to be a credible leader utilising studies, anecdotes and research. Combined together it provides a great walk through, showing what makes a good leader (and what doesn't) with enough actual science behind it to provide real weight to what the authors are saying.

Definately one to for the desk of any manager.

A very well written book by acknowledged and established experts in the subject of leadership, and the challenges that it brings.
The introduction draws you gently into the main text, where the authors explore the key tenets of leadership in a very readable and easy to follow manner.
Plenty of 'soundbites', plenty of motivation, all backed up with solid theory and case studies - it is bang up to date with relevant situations that we all recognise - this is an absolute must for anyone in a managerial position that wants to be taken seriously.

The book looks at survey results into the characteristics which make a successful leader, and and looks at the key characteristics in more depth. Essentially, it boils down to having credibility - hence the title. The book outlines key elements in developing these characteristics: how knowing who you are, and your beliefs, appreciating those you work with, and your customers, having shared values and a common goal, developing others, being optimistic, and being human.

In many ways, much of what is discussed in the book features in other management texts as spiritual and emotional intelligence. These are essential elements which make someone into a leader, as opposed to a manager. The book is an updated version of Credibility: How Leaders Gain and Lose It, Why People Demand It (J-B Leadership Challenge: Kouzes/Posner). This version has new anecdotes and examples, and is more focused than the earlier version. There is, apparently, a companion volume: Strengthening Credibility: A Leader's Workbook (J-B Leadership Challenge: Kouzes/Posner) to help the developing leader to build the skills needed to develop and sustain credibility. I have not had the opportunity, as yet, to read and review the workbook.

I enjoyed reading this, and found it to be an inspiring book to read, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking to develop their understanding of leadership.

`Credibility' is a business book from two respected authors which tries to show us the various principles of management that lend credibility to your leadership and which will engender respect and support from your staff.

In clear and engaging language the authors guide you through 6 areas to focus your attention on (discover your self, appreciate constituents, affirm shared values, develop capacity, serve a purpose, and sustain hope). It does this by explaining the principle and then giving examples of where this has gone wrong and also where it has been successful.

There isn't any jargon to bog the text down in and the principles, whilst seeming like common sense, are explored in enough depth to give you an insight into how they can be successful and how by applying them it will benefit the business relationships with those above and below you.

All in all this is an informative and well thought out book and if you apply even a fraction of what is discussed in these pages you should see a marked improvement in your working relations and have a happier, more productive team.

Kouzes & Posnes offer a classic all-time best in this consummate title that fuses leadership, character and growth excellently. There is much in this title that will develop and stretch every reader whatever their context of role and influence. The central thesis of the book concerns the defining differences between the authentic, the phoney and the resulting consequences in the marketplace today.

There is pace, wisdom, accessibility, 360-degree helpfulness in the range of values based chapter-topics that are the main body of this new and exciting work. I particularly enjoyed the 'sustain hope' chapter, as is stated.... "Keeping hope alive is also essential to an active and healthy life."

Credibility, has an transatlantic swagger that may alienate some, but the uniqueness, thoroughness and authenticity, should be winsome for all. Top class stuff!
