Having previously encountered Gareth Roberts' first New Adventures effort - the inappropriately named Highest Science - I approached this with some trepidation. Fortunately it exceeded my expectations and proved to be well, mediocre. I admit to skipping several chapters in the middle due to the limp dialogue and tedious plot. I also have to say that I found it hard to ascertain whether Roberts was going for humour (the human-spider hybrid, contract killer with a penchant for 'cowboy chic' and a Lancashire accent...named, wait for it, Ernie Macmillan!) Whether he was going for pathos (the single mother assassin sent to kill the Doctor and who instead ends up having her baby delivered by him!!) Or whether he was aiming for satire (the empty-headed actor who is working for the bad guy but just wants to keep his ratings high!!!) Absolute tosh. Sorry Gareth but if you ever read this then please, no more!
