This is a great series, and if you're prepared to immerse yourself in the book will give you a pretty good handle on the workings of this fascinating (and ancient) language. However you really need a native speaker or very good pronounciation help (youtube etc) if it's to be an effective aid to communication rather than a study in linguistics.

As the book says itself, it is an exposition of Latvian grammar rather than an introduction to the language. I do not a have the expertise to comment in depth, but it reads well and every point is illustrated with a Latvian example.
