This is a great intro to Security. It is very clear and easy to digest, and covers most contemporary issues.

Perhaps one of the most overly wordy text books I have ever had the misfortune to read. Considering that this is a set book for my university course, I suppose that it must have intrinsic value, and admittedly after trudging through it for hours on end, one does feel that their knowledge on security issues has increased. This is particularly in regards to key definitions, and the kind of specific, technical knowledge that essay markers love. This, however, comes at the cost of the text book being incredibly boring, and thus nigh on impossible to read while high. Therefore, this book is probably of use when cramming for exams, but is too dull to read for pleasure.

I bought this book as an International Security student to brush up on my International Relations theoretical frameworks. The first part of the book is good for this, but I imagine any basic IR introduction would have done just as well (and been cheaper). As far as Security goes it is extremely basic - very little of substance that you couldn't get from just reading a newspaper occasionally, and at times pure waffle. Good enough, I suppose, if you're an IR undergrad doing a Security module but totally inadequate for any deeper study.
