An accessible and thought provoking book
on 12 March 2011
This is an accessible and thought provoking book for any student of social policy, welfare or related field of study. It offers an introduction to theory and analysis of the concepts underpinning social policy and welfare in the UK - Professor Allen's treatment of the dynamics of power in institutions and welfare(a comparison of Weber and Foucault) is particulary instructive, as is Dawson's tracking of the suplanting of Keynsian economic theory by the free-market New Right. The chapter on Welfare illustrates these theorectical perspectives in a succinct analysis of the transformation of social democratic welfare into the pluralistic Third Way system embraced by New Labour. This book has the added bonus of being emminetly readable!!
