I wouldn't say this book is 'vital' to everyone studying A2 English Language. What I would say, however, is that it offers useful exam practice for students on a portion of the A2 Course. A good deal of the book is spent on the sociolinguistic ('pragmaic') aspects of language change.
Beard clearly knows his stuff and he's also a rare thing-an A Level examiner who also manages to be an interesting and witty writer.

The Intertext series of text books are ideal for students (and teachers) of A-level English. This Language Change version is adapted to aid students of English Language at Advanced level, and is suited to both the AQA and OCR exam syllabi. With a range of suitable exam-style texts, clearly written pointers on how to use linguistic frameworks to analyse them, information on key aspects of etymology and sociolinguistics all packed into a slim but extensive volume, this is a must-buy for all students either seeking to improve their understanding of Language Change or revising for their final exams. It is also of great practical use for teachers either new to English Language A-level or needing to brush up their exam knowledge.
