Professor Beckett has a long involvement with the history of guerrilla warfare and in this volume expands it to all insurgencies and to their responses. He covers over 200 years of history and a remarkable number of insurgencies. The sheer range of the book is astonishing though it comes at a price as the text often switches from one topic back to another catching the reader unawares. I enjoyed the analysis of strengths and weaknesses especially where the same army was winning in one place and losing in another. I suspect some readers will have been left stunned by the sheer weight of stuff; for them it is perhaps best used as a chocolate box from which to pick a few favourites. As someone who needs to understand the longer trends I enjoyed it and thoroughly recommend it.
