I found this book immensely useful- the first half starts by giving breif critical reviews of several of the most common fary tale types (cinderella/catskin, snow white, bluebeard, hansel and gretel, and so on) and examples of that story type from various sources.
The second half has a number of core readings from the most influential critics on fairy tales- and these are fantastic- Zipes, Bettelheim, Warner, Propp, and a basic description of the Aarne-Thompson classification system.
Overall this book gives a good basis in the critical aspects of fairy tales, and of all the books I have read in this area, this book is probably the most approachable.
The book does not go into great depth on any one particular area of this genre, but it provides a solid foundation overall.

I bought this book for my University course. It includes criticism as well as the texts. Another useful part of the book is that is gives variants of these tales, for example, "Little Red Riding Hood" and the varaints "Little Red Cap" as well as poems on this by Roald Dahl.

Great book if writing essays on Fairy Tales.

This book is a fabulous resource. It has a wide selection of tales that are well-organised and accompanied by truly useful and accessible criticism. It's definitely a scholarly text, but would be useful to the casual reader also who wants to know about the origins and patterns in the fairy tale tradition.

This is a great text which compares the fairy tales to original folk tales and oral tales. It has introductory essays and the texts themselves as well as critical essays central to the study of fairy tales.

This is a great edition for general readers as well as students and academics. The editor has done a wonderful job of selecting both different tellings of the tales themselves as well as some of the best critical writing on fairytales (Zipes, Propp, Warner, Bettelheim etc) to give a multifaceted view of these well-known stories. Her introduction also manages to cover a huge amount very briefly and lucidly. The issue of feminist responses to fairy tales is particularly well handled. I would recommend this very highly for those interested in teaching fairy tales.

Stocking filler for folklore loving son. Well worth the purchase. Norton collections are well known for their expertise and therefore value.
