It is simply impossible to come up with any anthology that doesn't neglect some of the exceptional works in any particular era. But as a guidance and a way to start to get to know about 20th c. music, this books proves to be useful. The scores are neatly reproduced and have English translation for non-English musical terminology used in them. The book goes with its twin textbook of the same author & publisher; although it is a self sufficient book if you simply want to see the scores and read some simple analyses. The more detailed history & in-depth analytical discussion come in the other book.
The price of the book might be a bit high, as it is the case for all scores. But the diversity of styles and composers you get makes it worth ever penny (...just!). Some of the more avant-garde approaches have not been covered, as electronic music doesn't also get a big part. It has been tried to include the biggest work of every genre, but the criterion for that are a bit discussable.
If you want to know the MUST-KNOW pieces of 20th century music & can't live without their scores, then go for it!
Bought this for my son who is studying Composition at degree level. He say it is really good and has read it cover to cover. It is helping him to understand musical styles, notation and other composers methods and styles. He recomends it highly...
