I've read 4 or 5 of the Reacher novels now, and this was the first one I struggled with. After a gripping start (which is why its got 3 stars and not 2) I thought this got horribly bogged down in the middle. For dozens of pages Reacher and Pauling engage in this sort of conversation. "It couldn't have been the man with no tongue because the cat was at no. 10 on Thursday". "Yes but on Wednesday the body was nowhere near the cat" etc etc. After a few pages of this I was losing interest, and after a lot more I struggled to finish the book.
However, in the end I did finish it, despite Lee Child's annoying 3rd person comments near the end along the lines of "Reacher alone in the dark and invincible". There was a big twist at the end that I didn't see coming, which again helped it to get 3 stars. But would I recommend it - no I wouldn't. There are better Reacher novels than this.
