A definitive description of each of a large number of ballets - more of a reference book really, and reflecting the views of a well-known choreographer. For each ballet, there is also a brief introduction giving music/choreographer details and significant "first" performances.

Bear in mind it was originally written in 1954 (but is no less valid for that).

Also note, there are no illustrations.

Unfortunately one of the ballets I'm going to see, Mayerling , does not appear in the book. As far as I can tell the 101 ballets that are included are covered pretty well.

If one loves to speak about dance, the best of excuses to exercise this healthy and passionate hobby is just to name the tittle of one ballet. Then, almost by magic evocation, a thousand of memories shall grow easily telling of countless nights spent at the theatre, unforgettable anecdotes concerning one's favourite dancers, a whole catalogue of little precious reminiscences that any balletomane hoards in his/her luggage of life. Now imagine you are Mr. B. pretending to name one by one the arguments of 101 ballets, from A to Z indeed. Would you need anything else to condense a vast part of the magic of dance in a single book? Next best thing to watch a performance is to hear a storyteller showing us the argument of so many ballets known so well and permanently new-discovered, specially when Mr. B. so generously provides, as he does in his book, dozens of personal records that makes the lecture more enjoyable and exciting.
