More than thirty years after his death Elvis Presley is as popular has he ever been. I know from personal experience that many people are still fanatically devoted to him, because a few years ago I had a letter printed in my local newspaper in which I had the temerity to criticise him; at one point the reaction got so bad that I thought I might have to get police protection.
In this book Charlie Connelly travels the globe trying to find out why Elvis's appeal is still so strong after all this time. To do this he travels to the places that were important locations in Elvis's life. As Elvis was not a well travelled man most are in America - Tupelo, where he was born and grew up, Memphis, where he lived for most of his life, Hawaii, where he made some of his most memorable performances and also a place he loved and Las Vegas, the city most people associate with the later, cat-suit wearing Elvis. In an attempt to get to know Elvis better, in each of these places Connelly visits the places that Elvis visited and talks to people that knew Elvis. On the lighter side, whilst in Hawaii he even unsuccessfully attempts the buy a shirt similar to one once worn by Elvis.
Connelly also travels to Germany, where Elvis was stationed whilst he was in the army, Canada, the only nation where Elvis performed outside the USA and to the small town in Scotland from where Elvis could trace back his families roots.
Some of his other travels are a little more offbeat. He meets, for example, a man who sings Elvis's songs in Latin and the Jewish Elvis impersonator who performs under the name of Schmelvis.
As with all Charlie Connelly books, this is an extremely pleasing read, being both informative and humorous. I had delayed reading it simply because I do not like Elvis's music, but this turned out to be irrelevant as whilst it will have greater appeal to his fans, non Elvis lovers will enjoy it too.
I'm only three chapters into Charlie Connelly's IN SEARCH OF ELVIS, but already it is promising to be as fantastic a read as his other books (I've previously read Attenttion All Shipping and And Did Those Feet. His books are intelligent, humorous and informative and I like them very much. I hope to read lots more by him and can't recommend him strongly enough.
What a fun book and so well written, mind you I am a bit of a Charlie Connelly fan and have all of his books. Would certainly recommend this book even though you may not be an Elvis fan, which I'm not,it's such a good and interesting read.
