Dreadful recordings not a self teaching course.
on 6 October 2015
This is not a good book for teaching yourself. It is a book for a classroom group and many of the exercises expect participation of more than one person. I also found it was very fragmented and at times difficult to follow. My main criticism of this pack is the recordings they seem to follow a belief that a student should be subjected to interviewer and interviewee who do not speak well enunciated Spanish. Whilst this maybe great for natural linguists and advanced learners it renders the conversations incomprehensible to many. This is made worst by many of the recordings having an echo (to the level where a BBC interviewer would appologise for the bad line) and contorted dialog. I give one example from lesson seven a response when asked about her interests* . "Pues mira, mis intereses son, pues desde luego, mis intereses, desde luego, seria venirme a España" Well look, my interests are, well of course my interests, Of course I would go back to Spain.
Yes I am sure that some Spanish speakers ramble on like that but most of the ones I speak to do not. My weakness in Spanish is listening to dialogue and these recordings are of little use to me.
* (actually here I think the word, "intereses" is being used as inclinations but I did not find that in my two Spanish English dictionaries and they do not put it in the book's vocabulary although that meaning is given in the Academia dictionary)
