Comprehensive, explains quite complex issue in an accessible way.
This book has got its own good reputation mainly due to author's look on all aspects of soldering at the divisional level

This book's approach is a detailed examination of 3 German Army divisions that fought on the Eastern Front.
Bartov carefully constructs a series of arguments based on the demographics, the casualty figures, the effects of propaganda, and on documented orders. He concludes that the ordinary German soldiers and their junior officers were fully committed to the ideology and the execution of the racially-inspired war being waged against on this front of the war.
Bartov also contrasts this with the very different history of the war in Western Europe, which was much less driven by racial ideology.
All arguments are carefully and methodically contructed and thoroughly cross referenced with original documents and with the work of modern German scholars in this field.
This is a very important work.
