I remember this book from my childhood and I get teary just telling people about it. It's the story of a baby elephant who is lost in the jungle and gets made fun of by the various other animals for the way he looks. Then he's found by a great herd of gray elephants who tell him he's a perfectly wonderful little elephant. Every child should have this book. Bill Cosby should read this book; he's probably already written his own version of it!
This is another Little Golden Book classic, now available on kindle, complete with wonderful retro illustrations. The story begins with a little happy elephant, dancing through the jungle. However, the other animals and birds are not so thrilled with his dancing – he is shaking the jungle to pieces. Anyway, what kind of animal is he, with his big ears and big nose and saggy baggy skin? Before long, the happy little elephant is confused and ashamed and discouraged – and, more than that, he is in danger….
Happily, the little saggy baggy elephant is rescued by a whole herd of other saggy baggy elephants, who look just like him. This is a delightful story about embracing yourself the way you are and finding out where you belong.
This is a delightful, vintage story. I bought this as a sentimental gift for my Mother, although every member of the family is over the moon as the older generations are in awe of such a favoured childhood classic and the younger generations are enjoying it for the first time. Predominently a childrens book, but if you remember this title, it is enjoyable whatever your age.
My son got fascinated by the story, always full of tricky surprises, either the tiger or the crocodile wanting to nibble off some of Sookie's extra pounds! Thanks to the saucy parrot we introduced the concept of hurting anothr person's feelings!
