I first read this 30 years ago and have read all his books. They bring home the brutality and madness of the war like no other writer.
Noone can know what the horror of Stalingrad was like and while this certainly gives a glimpse its also entertaining. To print nothing but the truth would have made it about 2 pages long.. All the characters would be dead...
Hassel did serve though and it is based on the things that he saw. As he says just the uniform changes the extremists are the same sick twisted barbarians throughout history.
Read it and his others and count yourself lucky
