This is outstanding even by the high standards of the Pevsner series.

The format is now familiar - thumbnail sketches of the architecture of all the interesting buildings in the county, old and new, famous and obscure, public buildings and private houses. Thoughtful, erudite, and readable introductory essays. Comprehensive indexes.

But whereas Pevsner sailed through every English county for his original series, and knew some better than others, this Essex volume has been edited by a person no less observant and scholarly, but whose deep knowledge and love of Essex buildings of every stripe shines through every page. He also puts in more history than most Pevsners.

He has packed in more material than ever before and has an overview which slots everything satisfyingly into place. He is never sentimental, but always kind. The colour plates are good, too.

This really is an inspiration. It will make you see Essex with new eyes.

This is one of the best of the 20-odd Pevsners that I have. The introductory essays are particularly good and the individual entries have been updated well with good sketch maps and photos. The book reminds you how interesting Essex is away from the sprawl of London and the Thames estuary. This is a must-have for anyone visiting Essex with an interest in architecture and townscape.

This is a comprehensive up dating of the 2nd Pevsner edition. It is an invaluable guide to the buildings of the county whose author is not afraid to express opinion and values. No-one who is interested in Essex, its landscape and built environment can be without it.

I bought this book because I have always been a fan of the Pevsner Guides and was delighted at Mr Bettley's innovative up-date. We lived in Essex for many years and his introduction of 'Perambulations' for many of our favourite places has brought back happy memories of our explorations. It enables you to plan how best to explore your chosen venue and ensures that you do not miss any details as you perambulate. Well done Mr Bettley and we look forward to further volumes in the series from you.

A superb series, indispensible and a companion to my 2nd edition of 1965.
