I've read a lot of "man's man" books and while Maddox's The Alphabet of Manliness is probably the most humorous, in Maddox's own unique style, this book gives it a run for its money in terms of being just an out and out great read.

It's different from Twiggers longer books, such as Angry White Pyjamas: An Oxford Poet Trains with the Tokyo Riot Police,Voyageur: Across the Rocky Mountains in a Birchbark Canoe or Being a Man in that its made up of short chapters, not really longer than four or five pages at most. Although that is in no way a complaint.

There are 94 chapters in all, including the cooking and eating of Puffer fish mentioned in the title, ice hole swimming as pictured on the cover and topics both mundane, such as dealing with a bee swarm, the "ankles heel of modern life", ie looking after your knees, to the more extraordinary, headbutting ice blocks, safe cracking and sea castaway survival.

Along the way there's a great trivia to be had, such as a summary of Casanova's pick-up wisdom and the rules of duelling, the pace is great, writing style engaging and it fails to be either too macho or idiosyncratic. Should appeal to Twigger's fan base but could appeal to anyone, I'd definitely recommend it and I'm personally sorry it took me so long to discover it.

Great fun. Excellent for dipping into. Not sure 'real men' need to kill everything they come across but otherwise informative. I'll have to try some of the suggestions despite being female!
