Very well written. Well researched historical facts, interspersed with personal observations from his time on Lindisfarne. His love for the island and its past are quite infectious, making the book difficult to put down, and leaving the reader with a determination to read more of his work.

If you are interested it the area this is first class. The author has such a gentle manner. Full of memorable quotes e.g. "Church has sent people out to proclaim the Gospel who are well versed in scripture but do not have a deep personal relationship with their God". The book draws a vivid mystical picture of the Island and surrounding area which will captivate the reader.

David gives an insightful history and current picture of life on Holy Island - including during his time there as incumbent for a number of years. He points out the significance of various places as well as the beauty, peace and wherewithal for quiet contemplation and opportunities to enjoy the beauty of nature, despite the numerous tourists and pilgrims who flock there on a daily basis.

I skipped too many pages because of the repetitive historical data which did not capture my imagination at all. A shame because Holy Island is a magical and memorable place, and this book was unmemorable. Myra Nichols

I am taking pilgrimage to Lindisfarne later this year and wanted to know more about the history of the Island. This book provides this and more.

Vivid history, mystical tone. David Adam captures the essence of Holy Island, Lindisfarne, drawing us into a bloody, but faithful history.
