Michael Perham's book is most useful for its practical suggestions on the pastoral uses of the new Common Worship services (a new book in the Church of England)The title of his book is a little misleading because it includes comment on more than those services contained in the Pastoral Services Book and covers the Eucharist and initiation rites as well as marriage, healing, funerals etc. The book begins with a section on the nature of liturgy and then explores principles and practice. As well as looking at the pastoral use of various services , he also makes comment on the implications of the Christian year. The book will be useful to Anglican clergy, Readers and lay people who are involved in the planning of liturgy. Because of its practical nature it may also be of interest to worship leaders in other Christian denominations as they seek to link liturgy to the church's pastoral task. It is a very readable book which tries to avoid too much religious jargon

If you are involved in devising or leading worship in the Church of England, this is the book for you! It unpacks both theology and praxis, encouraging the reader to reflect on why we do what we do...and how we might do it better. Currently on my 5th copy, as I keep lending it to people who clearly value it too much to return!

As a Reader in the Church of England I have found this book to be really helpful when planning worship. There are sections on most of the usual Church services with a good breakdown of what can happen and when.

The book is easy to read and has much that would help all planners of worship.

"Love it" is possibly not the description I would have chosen but it is an excellent book if studying Common Worship. Clear explanations, lots of insights. He knows his subject, loves his subject and conveys it in an interesting way which is far from the dry theology I was expecting. Using it helped me to an A- in my essay so can't praise it enough!

Michael Perham gives us here a well written reflection on many aspects of church liturgical life. Throughout he infuses it with a desire for liturgy to be life giving and positive rather than stale ritual, moving readers beyond action and written words to the underlying meaning.

This book is really informative and explains the why for and where for of ministry. A perfect companion to more comprehensive liturgy and a must have for those starting out in ministry.

A wealth of wisdom on liturgy at the same time as being clear and readable. And inspiring! Really recommended to anyone writing about and/or 'doing' liturgy.
