For a lover of words, this is an interesting book. It gives you a "fascinating history behind everyday words". The words are listed alphabetically and there are little sections on word groups such as, nautical words, Romany words (chav, pal), rhyming slang, Raj words, Yiddish words, euphemisms, etc. And there's an excellent section on the history of English. I love Reader's Digest book like this. Please keep on publishing them!

As a teacher I found this of unexpected use for some
foreign language students.
Many liked a "story" about the origin of a word which
Made it interesting to learn English, and enabled them
To remember the word more easily.
For this reason it is useful, but for a seious student of
language it is not adequate- just amusing.

A book of infinite interest - whenever you see a phrase that raises a question in your mind.

This book was like new, cost .01 pence plus a modest p&p. it is crammed with information - just right to browse when you have a little time to spare - I love it, thanks

The layout does not make locating the meaning of specific phrases very easy and quite a lot of phrases, which were researched, were apparently not included.

how can anyone write or say anything without understanding where the words they use came from? A must have for every bookcase.

Makes a good coffee table book full of useful (some might say useless) information about the origins of words and phrases.
