Julie Starr's first book `The Coaching Manual' was a welcome formal introduction for me to the theory of coaching and, more importantly, a really practical guide on how to be a coach. Some theory, lots of practical help and frameworks, and a sprinkling of good tips. All written in a personable, unpious manner (piety being one of the less desirable features of the newly found coaching community).

This book packs the same qualities. It is, however, a book for managers in the work place, essentially teaching them how to conduct a coaching conversation. It rather neatly divides in three: awareness - understanding what it is all about; ability - building the skills to do it; application - learning how to apply it in different practical situations.

No one suggest that every managerial or leadership conversation should be a coaching conversation (in the sense of enabling the coachee to learn and find their own direction). But the book illustrates how in rather more situations than we might imagine a coaching, rather than a directive conversation will be of benefit. Teaching the hungry man to fish.

Anyone who makes a study of the workplace will know that it abounds with people who for reasons of their own insecurity or ego (used here in its pejorative sense) are all too keen to exercise control, to be over directive, to impose their own solution with the consequent results of disempowering those around them and leading to a rather less productive environment. The ability to hold a good `managerial coaching conversation' is an essential tool to check that tendency and to create a much more empowered work environment. And the principles which underpin such conversations (for example a readiness to hold an adult:adult conversation) are fundamental to creating an empowered and productive work environment.

This book should be a 'must read' for anyone who wants to up their managerial game and really learn how to hold a good coaching conversation.

Truly insightful and really easily explained. Lots of supportive questions which help inspire you on a weekly basis rather than a one time read. I would strongly recommend this as an essential read for any up and coming coaches.

Brilliant Coaching is one of the most practical coaching books that I have come across. As a trainer of coaches and of leaders and managers who wish to take a coaching approach this is one of the books I most often recommend. It is an easy read, full of practical hints and tips for application. It demystifies coaching and makes it accessible as a skill and way of being and doing.

Julie Starr's book is thorough and easy to understand, a highly logical approach showing how coaching can be applied in many work situations. I liked the many examples, and her avoidance of jargon. This book brings coaching down to earth.

This is a really useful, practical book which helps managers develop their coaching skills. It is well structured, particularly the 5 sections on coaching skills, and managers can easily find what they need for a quick refresher at any time. This is one of the books I recommend to my 'manager as coach' students and they have found it really helpful.

I train and coach lots of managers on how to adopt a coaching approach and this book is always my first choice for essential reading for them. It's informative, practical and Julie beautifully captures the essence of coaching and how managers can use the skills to achieve much more effective outcomes. Having read many coaching books I rate this one very highly for managers and aspiring coaches.

Yet another cracking 'brilliant series' book. These books are fabulous, they're direct - to the point and easy to understand.
Another great addition to the series and perfect for anyone who is considering coaching, wants to know about more about the detail or would like to get into coaching / mentoring or guiding others!
Must read (after you've read brilliant NLP and Brilliant CBT)

Brilliant Coaching is an excellent book. It is very readable and has clearly been written by someone with extensive experience as a practising coach. This book is definitely grounded in the reality of coaching and provides a wide range of extremely useful insights and ideas.

Great book! Offers managers a good understanding of the coaching mindset, helps to shift from the control paradigm to coaching mindset. Full of practical tips and hints, and how to apply coaching in the everyday operation of a manager.
