A good addition to an old favourite
on 27 September 2012
This is a larger than usual hard back book with a panel down the side containing ten buttons, each with a different sound effect relating to the story (a cat, dog, bird, witch and so on). The pages are printed on paper, not board, so it may not be ideal for very young children. As you read the story, there are picture cues within the text to let you know which button to press and when to press it.
We already have a normal paperback version of Room on the Broom and it is a favourite in our household. When I read this new style book out loud to my children, I initially found the sound effects kind of got in the way of the rhythm of how I usually read it. Now I am more used to it, I think it has breathed new life into the story. I also think this style of book may encourage new readers to follow the words on the page more as you are reading them (even if you are following them with your finger at first) as they like to see when the next button needs to be pressed.
