ALex is another of Ibbotson's charming heroes - orphaned, and the impoverished heir of a castle stuffed with ghosts. An American millionaie, Hiram, buys every stone of it for transportation to America, on condition that Carra isn't haunted. It is, of course, and it's batty collection (which include a Viking and a Hell-Hound like an overstretched dachsund) nobly agree to leave and move in with Alex's relations. Their life is made miserable by the snooty ghosts they find there, and before long they are travelling with the stones of Carra to America, where Alex is getting to know Hiram's spirited but sickly daughter.....

I am a big fan of the Eva Ibbotson books, and this book was definitely one of my favourites. The plot is exciting and has many unexpected twists. Overall I would give it 9 1/2 out of 10.

My 9 year old loved it, as she does all Eva Ibbotson's books. One of the best children's writers there has been.
