Suspend all belief before you read this book - it is full of healing, magic, religion and supernatural powers. But, a very good and page-turning read.
The chapters are short and tight and narrated by different characters, mainly Sherry's Mother and Father, her nurse and the man who was driving the truck that ran her down. The nature of the narrative gives the reader a constantly changing point of view, each one rings so true as Wiersema makes all of his characters believable.
OK, so the story lines between science, supernatural and faith and questions our understanding about what death is all about, even so it is believeable and readable. The writing is so well done that you really do care about the family and what is going to happen to them next. Maybe the plot is fantastically unreal, but the story woven around it is totally real - the story of ordinary people and their ordinary lives. The fact that Sherry's parents do not become 'believers' overnight and keep their sceptical points of view only add to the credibility of the story.
I suppose simplistically this could be seen as a story about good versus evil - with a twist.
I really enjoyed this book as it explored a spiritual aspect we all wonder about. The story does not happen to a devout religious family, which makes it realistic. I particularly liked the layout with the characters thoughts and views easily defined at the top of the chapter. Clear and concise prose. Would recommend it to anyone who likes Jodi Picoult, Maggie O Farrell, Julie Myerson.
This is an amazing book. It has been cleverly written and covers so many levels, from the accident to the subsequent break down of a marriage to the very strange going on's in the library.
For me there is one slight weak point, and that's about 50 pages from the end, when one of the main characters simply states it's over. So you have a mass build up for that ending, but the book continues for another 50 pages and carries on being strong, so strong in fact that tears sprang to my eyes, trust me that doesn't happen easily.
All in all a very strong and well written book with characters you want to fight for
This book had me in tears almost all the way through. Anyone who is a parent will undoubtably feel very emotional reading this. For a debut novel it is stunning. really looking forward to more books by this author. Isabel. Central Scotland
