I found this hard to put down. The book is 'structured' as nine separate short stories, each introducing a different male protagonist, facing what it is to be a Man at advancing stages of life. Szalay succeeded in drawing me quickly into each man's situation with clean language. For me, without indulgence he taps into a number of generic themes of manhood and as I read I felt 'inside the head' and attitudes of each Man, despite them being quite different from me, a 50-something man. Szalay has real empathy with his protagonists, which rang true for me as a man, much as William Boyd's writing does. Not a novel where I laughed or cried, but one that made me breathe out and consider Life more than once. A real pleasure.
