Great reminder of what makes maths fun
on 8 January 2018
I purchased this book after attending a university open day with my daughter. The author gave a very entertaining talk to potential maths students based on material in this book. David Acheson was actually my university tutor nearly 40 years ago, but in the intervening period I had forgotten much of what I had learned. This book is a welcome reminder of what I really liked about maths. The authors own enthusiasm for the subject comes over really well. The book is very succinct and easy to read, rattling through examples of mathematical peculiarities, some of which I knew, some which I once knew but had forgotten, and a few (including 1089 itself) which were new to me. I also read my daughter's copy of 'Alex' s Adventures in Numberland' by Alex Bellos. Both books are a good read to anyone interested in maths and share many of the same examples. However, 'Alex' does so in a far more rambling manner while '1089' provides the highlights. I now feel inspired to relearn more of the maths that I have forgotten over the years. My daughter has bought me two more maths books for Christmas!
