This little book serves as a fascinating survey of the Romantic movement. It takes in the notion of the poet as divine, the embrace of nature and the flee from industrialiation, the importance of myth and an aesthetic attitude towards religion, the unification of thought and feeling, the love of the orient and the exotic, music as the ultimate art form to which all the others aspire , and a harking back to earlier times. Perhaps there is too much ground to cover in such a wide ranging subject to do it full justice in a study of this size, but it does give a good summary of its major aspects.

This covers Romanticism as it applies to all the arts, philosophy, political thinking, and even writing about history as viewed by various writers, thinkers, and commentators throughout Europe and revolutionary North America. There are a multitude of one liner comments form writers, but not much independent analysis from Michael Ferber. I was disappointed, because I was more specifically interested in British Romantic poetry, and there wasn't enough in this book to satisfy my curiosity on that.

Succinct, highly readable and comprehensive. Covers all the main elements in Romanticism and provides a good starting-point for a study of the period.

Short and sweet, good if you want a basic understanding, but a little general to be of any use in any specific areas.

A really accessible entrance into the period, but isn't overly general and provides a starting point for some really interesting discussions

I bought this book because I had an exam on Romanticism and it really helped to give a broad over view of the movement and was easy to read. It felt like it was written in a more casual way but still keeping some formality and was a good book to dip in and out of - you don't have to read it in order to understand it. Overall a good buy.
