Worth a read, if the typeface doesn't bother you
on 18 September 2017
Firstly, it's a pity that the typeface of the novel itself (not the intro and notes) is old-fashioned and difficult to read. It seems the publisher couldn't be bothered to re-set it for improved legibility. Aside from that, and a few typos, I enjoyed the novel until halfway through. I like the realism, the characterisation, and the social commentary. The plot, not so much. This is the second by Gissing I've read and I'd be willing to try more of his work, even though I was disappointed with this one.
