This book provides details of all of the communication skills which will be expected of you at graduate level in the UK, whether you're studying for an MSc, MRes or PhD. A lot of it might be taught under research methods as part of your course, but the bits that aren't are invariably the bits you'll need! It's comprehensive and up to date, going beyond the usual writing for publication and writing your thesis/dissertation chapters to include writing abstracts for conferences and structuring a grant application. There are lots of general tips on giving oral and poster presentations, as well as networking face to face and online, and keeping up to date within your field using RSS feeds. Overall, a good tool to help you as you start on the scientific career pathway.

In teaching "Scientific English & Communication" for our doctoral students here in Heidelberg, I've been looking for a book that would cover not only the writing aspect, but also emphasize oral presentations - this book is doing the job! Of course, you actually need a coach, and role models, to learn how to do things right, but Divan leads the way with a compact and authoritative coverage of the key issues involved (she's even got 3 pages on the "viva", which we Americans actually call the "defense"). She's clearly a good counselor and broadly knowledgeable on what counts. Her language is clear and friendly, you feel talked to, not "instructed"! I recommend this book!
