This is not a book specifically about painting but about art in general, be it painting, architecture, metal working, tapestry, sculpting etc. & aims to put art in its social context. It covers not only the actual methods of producing art but also who it was made for, how it was viewed and other such areas.

It is an easy read without being too technical or academic.

Because it covers a wide area it doesn't go into too much detail but rather provides a concise overview.

There are plenty of colour illustrations although these are sometimes rather small due to the actual size of the book.

Good value and an interesting read.

Instead of providing the reader with profiles of this or that artist, Welch aims at recreating the context in which Renaissance art was produced. Her inquiry is deep, rich, very well written and with an unprejudiced eye. Could be read together with How to read Italian Renaissance painting by Stefano Zuffi (Abrams).

This is quite an edifying contribution to an understanding of early Renaissance art. It concentrates on the social and political background to the development of art in this period, and ranges broadly over art in many different contexts and its myriad purposes. While perhaps over-making the point that in this period, religion was still a significant driver of cultural currents, and perhaps under-stressing the secularizing under-currents, it is nonetheless useful to anyone interested in the cultural developments of the early Renaissance period.

I now have two of these and both are excellent summaries of the period, and although providing enough information to gain an indepth understanding and flavour of the period, they also lend themselves well as a stepping stone for further research.
