This never worked for me, being insufficiently comprehensive even for 1984. The Cambridge Companion of 2009 I confess I'm not familiar with, but I'm very fond of others in the series. I tend to use Anita Silvey's inevitably America-biased Children's Books and their Creators (1995) supplementing its historical deficiencies with Brian Doyle's never-surpassed 1968 Who's Who; for more modern times Silvey mostly delivers. Not ideal, maybe - but fun!
This is an excellent reference book for parents, teachers and students of children's literature. It is straightforwrad to use and gives clear information about authors, their works and the history of children's literature. If you only have one reference book about children's literature this is the one to buy.
