A book to treasure.
Roald Dahls' work is superbly illustrated to hold the attention of the reader. This is one book that is exceptionally difficult to put down part way through any piece.
Warning - if you read one of these gems as a bedtime story to younger children you are likely to have them hanging on to every word right to the very last one. The imagination will be fired up for questions, and repeats will be wanted. Sleep is unlikely. You have been warned.

A varied and wonderfully imaginative collection of work, from possibly the most famous and well-loved children's author. Split into several categories, each song or verse is opened with illustrations from the notorious artist Quentin Blake, then followed by other graphic masters.

Old tales are given a twist, including the race of the hare and the tortoise, which is loaded with opinions on capitalism and power-struggles. But because of Dahl's accessible style and infamous dark eccentricities, none of the stories come across as pompous or badly disguised vessels to convey the author's own agenda. Instead, the pleasantly heavy, hard-backed book will offer inspiration to readers of all ages, whilst demonstrating a strong command of the tools of poetry.

There are countless ways in which the teacher could use this book. Perhaps most obvious of all, the class could use a poem as a foundation to build a single composition, or entire play. Poems could be unpicked to reveal the rules of rhythm, whilst art classes could be devoted to either replicating the art within the book, or to give pupils the opportunity to make their own illustrations. Due to the wide mix of work within `Songs & Verse', it is one of those rare occasions where it could be used across the entire Primary School age range, depending on how the teacher presents it.

If you were fortunate enough to have been introduced to the works of Lewis Carrol and Edward Lear as a child (I am now 75) then you will enjoy this book. Dahl's imaginative work at its best has been selected for this collection. The book is also beautifully illustrated.

A fabulous, fun poetry book which my 8 year old daughter loves! She had had it out from the School LIbrary and was very keen to look for a copy online to keep for herself, hence this purchase! The book was second-hand, described "as new" and was immaculate. Fast delivery and great price. We have enjoyed reading it immensely!

I bought this book for a year 2 class I was working in, after we finished our topic on the BFG. The rhymes and verses in this book were a great way to round up the topic and will also prove a good way to introduce more work by Roald Dahl.

Absolutely brilliant book, fabulous bargain. Met the author in the eighties and this was a lovely reminder for me - I'll give it to my grand-daughter when I'm finished with it/if I finish!
