This collection of beautifully translated short stories is a must for any Marias aficionado. Each tale encapsulates the essence of his style showing what he develops in his longer stories, a precise use of language that enhances the suspense which keeps one hooked in to the narrative throughout.
Dark and witty stories, but a bit flashy and shallow for my taste. I like to care a little about the people I'm reading about. Or be taken somewhere more darkly, exotically, convincingly stranger (as with Michael Faber) - somehow these stories fall a bit too much between those two poles.
