This collection of short stories has long been a favourite of mine. Borges is a master of the genre, packing more into a single line than some authors manage in a chapter. Time, death, love and religion are recurring themes, each handled with skill and awe-inspiring perspicacity.

Personally I think the first story is a bit of a shot to the head if you're not used to his style. Maybe try The Immortal for starters. After one or two, you'll be hooked and Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius won't make your brain hurt. Well, that's what it did to me ! !

This is definitely one of the books you should have read before you die.

The commonest comment that seems to prevail after being introduced to Borges is "how did I miss him"? or how come I hadn't heard of him before?.He seems to be a literary enigma to some that appears out of nowhere and restores faith in the power of fiction to stimulate the imagination. The stories are surprisingly short, well crafted, and deal in areas that inhabit the boundaries of esoteric knowledge and philosophical thought, and seem to aspire to reinterpret ancient history through the prism of metaphysical thought.

This is philosophical and mathematical at the same time. Fitting really, considering the massive overlap in the most raw form of each of these subjects. This is an amazing book if you like to think, and it's combined with some elegant but concise writing.

Bought this for the one short story, which I heard read on Radio 4. Nice edition, though not the cover pictured here.

I have read and enjoyed a wide variety of literature in my lifetime, but never before have I found such rubbish masquerading as itellectual work. David Bickford. UK.
