I loved this selection of short stories. The stories were insightful as to how it feels to have love and lost someone or yearned for that someone who got away. The stories are told as memories of the main character and as such have the added wisdom of perspective. They are touching without being sentimental and bitter sweet and whimsical just like long lost loves usually are.
There's something about Updike that keeps him from telling a story straight. Too many twists within the paragraphs and even the phrases. Too many times I have to go back to reading again the same sentence or paragraph just to know who it is that he is talking about.
A pity, really, for the plot of his stories is rather good.
