Dull, drippy and dated - disappointed!
on 7 December 2009
Yes, I know other reviewers love this, but I came at this fresh and unbiased by a good childhood experience of it. Pace dull; characters very dated - similar to Ballet Shoes in this way. The plot has great potential, but the back-and-forth in time lacked pace; also, endless portrayal of heroine child by other characters as 'fey' (what a word!), gazing off into the past in some helpless, mystical way. Her passivity was the key to my boredom. So I never made it to the end, all 288 large format pages - 388 or so in normal children's paperback. To be fair, dd to whom was reading it and who took it over enjoyed it.
