A fascinating and immensely readable account of how our attitude to the sea changed over time. For centuries the ocean was regarded in the west with horror, which Corbin explains as rooted in a belief in the natural world ruined after the Flood. Mountains too were seen as spoiled nature. It is only in the Romantic period that these attitudes underwent a dramatic change.
