The most terrifying and disturbing story I have ever read, by a genius writer.

An unusuall story but captivating it has the dark side to human nature

Ian McEwan knows what makes a story creepy. Set against the wonderful but slightly disturbing floating city of Venice, a bored couple on holiday loses their way in the dark network of small alleys. Blundering in a direction where tourists are rarely seen, they encounter a man that's willing to show them the way. In the end they are invited to visit his home and spend the night. The next day they are back at their hotel and still bored with each other. They never expected to see the man and his wife again, but something draws them on and unexpectedly they pay them another visit. The meeting proves fatal. To me it is essentially a love story, or rather a story of lost love. The couple sticks together out of convention and despite the boredom. They pay the price for neglecting what should be most precious: their love and regard for each other.

I thought it was more of a novella than a novel!
