Boring, pretentious, unrealistic and unlikeable characters
23 January 2017
It’s very rare that I get ¾ through a book and decide not to bother finishing, but this was such a struggle! I was reading it for a book club and was excited about it due to all the hype. But it was painfully badly written in a very irritating, pretentious style, with ridiculous paragraphs of description that meant nothing. I didn’t care about, like or relate to any of the characters. The extracts from Lotto’s plays were boring and far too frequent and drawn-out.
I’m half-way through the second half, written from Mathilde’s perspective, and I’ve realised that I just don’t care what happens, so am going to give up now. It shouldn’t be such a struggle to enjoy a novel! I’m happy to have the ending told to me at book club so that I can get on with reading something else.
