The unexpected thrill of discovering secrets kept me turning the pages
on 23 December 2017
Wow. This is a thriiling novel, and I mean thrilling in the sense of discoverery - what does lie behind the solidity of the marriage of Lotto and Mathilde? The first half of the book focuses on life through the eyes of the charming, expansive Lotto, an aspiring actor cum successful playwright. Then Groff shifts us to Mathilde's perspective and it's revealed that their relationship is mired in secrets, ones they keep from each other. Having read the first half of the book seeing Mathilde from the outside, it's absolutely fascinating to read what lies beneath her calm and capable exterior. But more than this, it unpicks how and why they've chosen their respective roles in the relationship and that the secrets that they keep from each other are in fact the very things that bind them together. An unexpectedly gripping read.
