Fascinating literary style... however -

On a regular day I would not have gotten past the first chapter... it just really isn't my cup of tea, but I had to know why it was so highly rated?
The more I read, the more i understood the narrator, and her choice of word and descriptions. The book is told from the perspective of a young girl whose family has been displaced and so they are living in informal housing/ squatter camps -not a position of luxury or leisure. At the beginning of the book everything is just raw and, for me, on the verge of obscene and too sensationalised, but the tone matures and shifts as the protagonist grows and shifts as well, which i thought was genius (this is both the strength, and the weakness of the book, in my opinion). There are a couple of descriptions in the book that i thought were absolutely spot on, a couple i founs hilarious! while the others, i felt, were unnecessarily colorful. I never skip through parts of a book, but i did in this one.
I can understand why it is esteemed the way it is... as a work of art, i think it is good... as a novel, not so much...I struggled
