A different kind of spy thriller, focussing on the psychology and motivation of the characters and their moral dilemmas. Captures very well the issues and political environment of the 1930s adn 40s and allows the characters to judge themselves rather than forcing current views and hind sight on those times. A balanced, measured, quiet style reflects the persona of Red Joan and contrasts with the tension of the conflict between the protagonists and the ever-present fear of detection. An excellent gripping read without any of the spurious sensationalism often found in the spy genre.
